Using A Self Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

Some people find it extremely important to look as if they have practically lived on the beach, soaking in the sun. However, perfecting color through actually laying out takes so much time and the UV exposure can be quite detrimental to one's health. Using a self tanning lotion will help a person get their golden glow without all the risks.

There are multiple hazards associated with sunbathing such as leathery skin, areas of discoloration, painful burns and melanoma. The UV lighting used in sun beds are no safer and can actually increase the likelihood of developing cancer by as much as seventy-five percent. Using specially made products to safely darken the skin is another option.

Products of this sort are available in many formats, including sprays, creams, gels, milks and mousses. Lotions are perhaps one of the simplest ways to obtain darker skin. The process of building a tan that is beautiful, enduring and as close to natural as possible may seem difficult at first, but it does get easier with practice.

Before beginning the process, there are a few things one needs to have on hand to get the best results. The first and most important item on that list is an ample amount of time. One needs to allow at least an hour or two for application and a thorough drying to ensure that coverage is complete, even and that the color does not get transferred to articles of clothing.

Exfoliating the day of the procedure, as well as a few days prior, removes old skin cells and leaves behind a new layer that is ready to absorb the product. Moisturizing the whole body but concentrating on trouble spots like the knees, elbows and ankles, daily during the week before application is important, as is making sure any shaving is performed at least an hour before beginning. These steps are key to priming the dermis to hold color longer and more evenly.

Before beginning, pull hair up and away from the face and body, find a space that is free of moisture and steam and make sure the body is completely dry. To keep one's palms from becoming unnaturally colored, tight fitting gloves should be worn during application. Take time to apply the product carefully and slowly, focusing on each area individually and using swipes that are even, broad and going in the same direction.

There are a few places on the body that have a tendency to be naturally darker than the surrounding areas. These are usually the thicker skinned sections like the elbows, knees and ankles, each of which have deeper lines that hold more color. To keep from obtaining a dirty appearance, dilute the tanner in a 50/50 mix with a moisturizer when applying to these zones.

Fifteen minutes is the minimum amount of time one is advised to allow for drying, though the longer the product is allow to set, the better the results. Any streaks or dark spots can usually be fixed by washing them in the shower or wiping with a damp cloth. To avoid the unattractive orange tint, try building a base color over time through thin applications of the tanner.
