Why Switching To A Straight-edge Razor Makes Sense

By Linda Parker

Shaving with a straight razor is a process that takes a little effort and dedication to master. Although the blades appear frightening to those unfamiliar with them, they're quite safe to use, albeit with a little caution. And thanks to several benefits of shaving with a straight-edge razor, you'll be quite glad to make the switch.

People who've switched to straight razors report that they offer a far much better shave. Thanks to the standalone blade, one gains a huge degree of freedom. You're free to turn the knob to increase or reduce the aggressiveness of the shave as you please. Additionally, there's nothing to inhibit you from increasing or reduce the angle. The result is that you have a much better ability to control the shaving process.

While quite a number of modern disposable blades use special materials to achieve a high level of slickness, only a polishing process is used in straight razors. The result is a much better cutting capability. The open blade is thus able to shave without having to pull hair strands out, which in turn translates to minimized irritation. And because you'll only need to run the blade a few times, there's less likelihood of cutting yourself.

Modern tri-blades work via a process known as hysteresis. Here, hair strands are pulled out by the first blade, while the ones that follow cut. Because the follicle is forced to retract beneath the skin surface, there's more likelihood of ingrown hair. This is because all the blades won't necessarily follow an identical path on the way. However, you'll never have to deal with such annoying situations when you switch to wet shaving.

Switching to a straight blade offers cost-saving benefits. In fact, you'll only need to buy the blade and a few other tools used to maintain it. Because most of them are only purchased once, you'll spend less than you would on modern alternatives. The quality of modern blades doesn't even go in line with their exorbitant prices.

Switching to a straight razor, conventional soap and a brush means one minimizes their environmental impact. Vintage blades don't even add emissions during the manufacturing process. And with no landfill waste or CFCs from aerosolized shaving products, using an open blade is perhaps the greenest way to shave. Old blades can even be sent to a recycling plant once one is done using them.

The open-blade shave offers quite the level of luxury and meditative benefits as well. This is thanks to the warm lather on your face, the irritation-free cut and the high level of craftsmanship used in making the blade. And you'll not find anything close with mass-produced modern alternatives, most of which are made of molded plastic or metal.

As one would see, there are many reasons why you should ditch whatever you currently use to shave and opt for a much better open blade. The traditional artisan technique involved offers quality results and luxury that you won't find on modern alternatives. The blades not only get the job done efficiently, but also bring little or no side effects. Their simplicity also means you can use them just about anywhere.
