Tips Pediatricians Wish Parents Knew

I know it's hard to research every little detail about what you should know for raising your kids, especially with a little one running around. So I did a little research and here are what the top pediatricians had to say about the top parenting tips.
Meals Should be Simple
Make sure that your kids have healthy foods on the table, give them a couple of choices, and try not to worry about much about what they do or don't eat. Restricting diets too much on overweight children and forcing underweight children to eat more usually ends up having the opposite effect.
Don't Pressure the Potty
While you may be ready to get them out of their diapers, a child is technically not considered delayed until the child is 4 years old. Your baby will be ready when their ready. 2 tips from pediatricians suggest 1. Your child must be given clues when they get the urge to go, not after they've already gone and 2. Is cleanliness, your child must have a desire to be clean.
Recognize Good Behavior
I can't tell you how easy it is to chastise them for the bad behavior but forget to praise them for doing the right thing. Some parents are so focused on preventing bad behavior they forget to recognize the good. But remember when you compliment good behavior they are more likely to repeat it.
Toddler Dental Care
Sometimes this can be a battle, but it is one well worth fighting. Their baby teeth are the holders for their eventual adult teeth so it's important to look for brown spots and when they start falling out (around 5 or 6 years). The front teeth generally fall out first, so if you think they are coming out too early call your pediatric dentist.
Sleep Schedules Work
If you don't know by now, you will find out how important sleep is to a toddler, for health and development. Having a schedule helps them prepare for sleep time and is a much easier transition for naps and bed time. Get a routine like reading, singing, taking a bath, anything to create a relaxing atmosphere.
Ignore Temper Tantrums
As hard as it might be, especially in crowded places, the best way to handle a screaming toddler is to ignore it, pretend like it's not happening. Toddlers are looking for attention, and when they don't get it, they generally stop their tantrum. What I've done in the past is always have another toy on hand that you can distract them with when they are in this mood.
Actually Talk to your Toddlers
It may seem weird but have conversations with your child. It is the best way to maximize your child's development of speech. I try to point things out when we see them and talk about their size, color, smell and sounds. Things like cars, airplanes, animals and cars are perfect. Reading and signing do wonders as well, and although they can't speak it, they recognize a lot of what you say.
Give Yourself a Break
Nobody is wonder parent, no parents are perfect, and we all make mistakes. You always hear about the neighbor who is feeding their kid this already, or this parent's kid is saying his ABC's already, or this mom ate the placenta (kidding, but it does happen). Trust your parenting skills, you know your child best so you know what is good for them. And when you want to pull your hair out because you can't take anymore, take a break!
